Area I: Assess Needs, Resources and Capacity for Health Education/Promotion

This responsibility requires educators to explore and analyze the community to which they want to plan a program for.

Curricular Resources 

Goal: The goal of our curriculum is to lower the stress levels among college students at California State University of Long Beach to improve overall mental health. 

 

Unit IV: Resources that help reduce stress

Unit Objective:By the end of the unit, students will be able to recognize the resources that are offered around them and their social support systems, to help reduce their stress levels. (cognitive, knowledge). 

Instructional Objective:By the end of the lesson, students will be able to…

  1.  List four resources available on the CSULB campus. (cognitive, knowledge) 

  2. Identify at least 3 people to communicate with for advice regarding their stress problems. (cognitive, comprehension)

  3. Increase willingness to share at least 2 of their stress problems to individuals for social support in boosting their self-esteem. (psychomotor, guided response)

  4. List at least 3 symptoms of their stress to a medical provider in reducing their stress levels. (psychomotor, guided response)

  5. Joinat least 1 stress reduction class available in Long Beach. (affective, valuing)

  6. Name at least 1 local stress management class in Long Beach. (affective, receiving)

  7. Schedule at least 2 yoga sessions in CSULB campus. (cognitive, comprehension)

  8. List at least 3 resources of national organizations regarding mental health (cognitive, knowledge) 

  9. Increase their willingness to disclose stress to a trusted individual by 20%. (affective, responding)

This article lists all the different types of stress and their characteristics, symptoms, durations, and treatment plans. It serves as a resource and a guide to students so that they may become aware of what kind of stress they have. The students will be able to identify  their stress so that they may be able to disclose that information to a medical provider that may help them properly manage it. Materials: access to the internet. 

 

 2.  Anxiety and Depression Association of America. (2018). ADAA reviewed mental health apps. Retrieved from https://adaa.org/finding-help/mobile-apps

This article provides a list of apps that students can use depending on their condition. It includes the main purpose of the app and its rating based on ease of use, effectiveness, personalization, interactive/feedback, and research evidence. The students will be able to choose which app targets their condition and use it to make therapy more effective. Materials: access to the internet with devices such as cell phone, laptop, or tablet, to download certain applications.

Thrive at the Beach is a program is held in CSULB for college students to meet with a health educator regarding their health and well-being. A student can schedule an appointment by calling the Office of Wellness and Health Promotion at 562-985-4609. This program offers advice from a health educator regarding factors such as: time management, stress reduction, social support, sleeping problems, and overall health. Materials need: cellphone to make an appointment to the office.

CSULB Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) is located in Brotman Hall Room 226 and their open from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday. Students that are struggling with their daily lives regarding stress, depression, social relationship, sexual assault, anxiety, and motivation. Students can schedule an appointment Monday through Friday, from 8am to 5pm. They also offer a 24-hour service to a counselor by phone call, if a student would like to speak to a counselor. Counseling services usually lasts up to an hour. In addition, this program is free of charge for CSULB students only. This program focuses on the CSULB students’ mental health experiences and helps improve their challenges through counseling.Students can contact the office to set up an appointment by calling (562) 985-4001. Materials needed: cell-phone to schedule an appointment.

Campus Mind Works provides different worksheets for students to work on whenever they are feeling overwhelmed, as well as ideas of activities that students can complete whenever they need a way to reduce or manage their stress. Materials: access to the internet with a mobile device or laptop.
